Good and Bad News – part 2

Personal Development, Works 8 Comments »

Thanks for the calls and emails I received and apologise for not updating my blog since then. I’ve been very busy lately …

The good and bad news I received could be summarised into this line: My boss could not give me a a room that is allocated for staff with Head level, simply because there is no room available on my floor …

More later.

Bad and Good News

Personal Development, Works 7 Comments »

It has been a while since the last time I updated my blog. Simply, the work has been very demanding and every time I arrived at home I don’t have energy to write.

I expected many challenges when I accepted the offer and so far the company (and my bosses) has never failed to give me those challenges. Additionally, there are many surprises here and there.

However, there was one surprise that really caught me off-guard, and that happened this morning.

This morning, I was at the course and I received an SMS from my boss. He asked me to call him. Curious, I immediately called him and he told me one bad and one good news. I was really surprised after hearing that news. I completely lost focus on the first half of the training as my mind was racing with many things…

Standards Council of Singapore – Merit Award

The first national-level award I received, hopefully it won’t be the last one …

Standards Council of Singapore - Merit Award

There are 35 recipients of the Merit Award. They are coming from different industries, such as digital imaging, safety, building and construction, electrical system, etc.

Setting up the standards are more like national service: we don’t get paid and instead we sometimes get critics on our works. So this award is a token of appreciation for our efforts and contributions.

There are also people who receive star and distinguished awards. There are only two people receiving distinguished award, one of them is from my alma mater, Dr. Derek Kiong.

I think I am the only Indonesian, or perhaps the few foreigners on the list.

Public Presentation: the result

Information Technology, Personal Development, Works No Comments »

Last week, on Friday, I gave a short presentation on Developing Standard-Compliant Courseware in the ELearning Seminar 2007 at UniSIM.

The presentation was quite smooth, the audience looked like the topic very much. In fact one of the feedbacks of the seminar is: Some content not very relevant especially those in the afternoon, except the last one, which is something new.

Yeah, I was allocated the last slot in the seminar. Not the slot I personally like. Slots in the morning are the best, but at least it is better than the first two slots just after lunch. The reason is very obvious, the audience tend to lose focus no thanks to the usual afternoon sleepy time and lunch ….

Actually the topic is not really new. Hiding the complexity of technology from end-users is not a new concept (in fact I have an opinion that a good IT system is the system that does not require the users to know the nitty-gritty of technical requirements/processes). Content Management on the web is not a new technology. But the problem is not many companies are able to implement all of those stuff …

The power point slides should be available at ITSC website in a few days.

Public Presentation

I will give a public presentation on 26th of October, as part of the eLearning Standards Seminar 2007.

I am planning to give a presentation on developing standard-compliant courseware. Even though the title reflects the usage of standards in the eLearning world, in reality the same principles could be used for developing any web applications. It will also shows how technology is used to make standards implementation transparent to end-users.

The presentation is based on the experience in developing courseware in my company as well as my latest projects. We have been a forerunner in this area, implementing various technologies and standards in our courseware. I believe, at least in the region, no other education companies really match us in this area.

At the same time I am also writing a paper based on the same topic. I hope I can submit the paper to some journals or publications early next year. The biggest problem in writing the paper is not the time (suprisingly) but rather the mood to write … :-(

If you are interested to come for the seminar, you can register at http://www.itsc.org.sg/prevEvent.do?eventKey=11. It is free :-)
